The term ‘alt-Nat’ is becoming increasingly popular on Twitter as a put-down. It’s not clear from the twittering whether the alt-Nats are an offshoot of that dreaded sub-culture, the Cybernats, but as a Nat of some eccentricity, already, I sense the need to embrace the term and to ironically, if necessary, turn it round into a positive identifier.
The Fugs! I’m off to Youtube them!
I’m thinking here of the way words such as ‘nigger’, ‘punk’, ‘hippy’, ‘freak’ were embraced and made cool. I know, I’ve just typed ‘freak’. Oh shit, I’ve done it again! Is it possible to talk about how the originally abusive, when used by squares man, term ‘freak’ (oops!) was turned by hippies or freaks (oops!) into the really cool, sharp, hip, self-identifier ‘freak’ (oops) but only when used by freaks (oops) themselves?
Also ‘alt’ has already been used as a positive in ‘alt-Country’ to refer to the more authentic, less glitzy form than we see at events in Vegas.
However, finally, the best alternative version of alt is the oldy Celtic word for a high place or a fresh water source in a high place. So, an alt-Nat may be a bit alternative in a cool refreshing way and, of course, a bit lefty, but it now, also implies that one is on a higher plane.
Alt is one of those ancient Indo-European wordbits (morphemes) that appear across modern languages – altitude, altruistic Altnaharra?
Oslo (my new word for the over-repeated and thus boring Also) rta, the correct way (?) is in art, arithmetic, aristocrat.
Play the game of hunt the morpheme!
Advice to newly joined alt-Nats – substances may be used to attain that higher plane. I’m using espressos.
This new coinage – – ‘alt-nat’ – looks like a retread of the term ‘cybernat’, so that the unionists and the media can re-run their ‘aren’t independence supporters such thugs?’ trope.

Cybritnattery and Brit Nat agitprop “journalism” Is the “mainstream” for Scotland these days.
Thing is, it has been going on for so long, many people now filter out the fake news and out-of-context stuff from the BBC/Scotsman/Herald and all the southern press.

Right, I’ll start by trying to levitate a local Tory I know. If that works, we can try it on something bigger.

My substance is a wee Grouse of an evening – appropriate in the circumstances, and unfortunately I’m still a 40 a day man – inspired in my youth by Macdonald’s tobacco shop in George IV Bridge that had a sign stating “He who smokes thinks like a philosopher” More than half a century later I’m still waiting on it to kick in.
One thing it doesn’t do is make me computer literate, otherwise I would attach a link to show that your photo of Mickey Dolenz is a dead ringer for Arthur E Neuman who always appeared on the front page of my regular philosophy magazine.
As for triggering my memory of Jefferson Airplane – what can I say – Grace Stick….Prrrrrrrrrrrr!

Should be Alfred E Neuman.

Do you beat the Grouse or does the Grouse beat you?
Either will do for me. I still remember my dad, just back from the Kirk, looking with confusion at one of my Mad comics.

Espresso and sleep deprivation by the sounds of it 😉
Good info on alternative meaning of Alt. I’m not particularly prone to name-calling myself, except for the occasional outburst of weirdo or arsehole, or an accidental ‘moron’ even though that isn’t PC anymore, and most of it is directed at myself, so tend to ignore it when others do it. What does Alt-Nat even mean? I mean, what do the name callers even mean by it? They must be weirdos.
I reserve the term ‘prick’ for bad drivers for some reason.
A family member had a sudden and unusual outburst recently about ‘queen Nic’ – it took me a while before I figured out why I found this offensive: (a) any assumptive name-calling preceding an opinion shows that it isn’t a reasoned personal opinion (b) any argument requiring name-calling is not strong enough to support said opinion so it was pointless bringing it up in the first place (c) my reasoned past educational opining has had no effect, and (d) I don’t do it myself, even for horrors like T May etc, people whose fascist ideology fills me with dread, not even for Trump, a charicature if ever there was one – so I kind of expect people close to me to respect that and just not do it in front of me.
Anyway, Alt is a high place for me now.
Heh, I used to get MAD too, had totally forgotten that, I hadn’t realised it was a philosophical publication at the time, but it’s good to hear I had a good rounded eduction through it.

The ‘ Alt Right ‘ entry on Wiki is interesting, presumably the inference by adding Alt to Nat is just another attempt at tarring Indy support with the ‘ blood and soil ‘ label. Scotland of course voted emphatically to share citizenship with 500 million other Europeans, must be a referendum coming.

Btw, what is the pressure group going to be pressurising?
Also, where are all the good news stories, is it a slow week? We’ve had tyres going down in Dundee, multiple warnings of,,, warnings. Dammit, I’ve forgotten the wording but they had ‘dire warning’ style warnings on the radio this morning, upping the warning ante (but everything is fine and grand with Brexit).
I mind when the Timex factory closed in Dundee, those were dark days indeed, but surely there will be something to replace Michelin soon. The radio didn’t mention the UN investigating human rights abuses in the uk soon. Weegingerdug is back, married and refreshed, and suggesting we all indulge in mass rallies the day after Brexit, on the 30th March 2019 – sounds like a good plan. It would have been good to have a mass strike, have the wheels of industry grind to a halt for a day, but it turns out it’s a Saturday, and most people have their weekend then.
Grouse Beater says we could do with a constitution – I like the idea of crowdsourcing it like the Icelanders did, but someone else will have to organise it, I’m busy.
I haven’t been keeping up with the news, hence the slim pickings here, I kind of zone out when the radio says ‘warning,,, [backgroud fuzz noise] ,,, warning that,,,[background fuzz noise] ‘ so haven’t really paid attention, is there anything happening? Where’s Ludo with his snippets?
Oh! I’ve still to watch the Norway Nation film! I knew there was something I was going to do.
