This is the latest development in the Scottish government’s plans to build 50 000 new affordable homes in this term of government. I’ve already noted the difference between the Scottish and English governments on this crucial task:
Angus council will build 600 new homes over the next five years with the support of the £25 million package.
Communities convener, Councillor Craig Fotheringham, said:
‘We will improve the provision of affordable housing across Angus by building houses of the highest quality in the places where people need them most. Doing so will further enhance Angus’ ever-growing reputation as a great place to live, work and visit. Accessibility and energy efficiency will be the cornerstones of our housing design, so that we deliver homes that will stand the test of time for the benefit of people now and in future generations.’

Hi John and BTP – your cautionary warning is a valid one BTP – I wouldn’t trust these new Tory/Lab councils as far as I could throw ’em – but fortunately I believe the funding agreements are pretty tightly drawn for these types of social housing projects.
I mentioned the improved Waste Recycling figures announced yesterday and we get a bit more info today. Over the ‘modern period’ when central govt and local govt took on the ‘organising/providing’ role for large scale public services – which in Scotland were largely administered/coordinated via the Scottish Office (and its earlier incarnation) – we managed to dump most of our ‘rubbish’ in landfil for 150years.
Over the 20years of devo a much clearer focus on recycling has been developed. Over the 10years of SNP Scottish Govt many projects have been examined and brought into being. Today, further funding was announced to accelerate this vital work:
£8.4 million to reduce emissions and household waste.
Projects which are increasing recycling rates, reducing emissions and re-using resources are to receive a share of £8.4 million.
Around £4.2 million will help 17 small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) develop new products which will re-use whisky by-products, waste plastic and household furniture, through the Circular Economy Investment Fund.
The quantity and quality of recycling will be improved through £4.2 million which is being made available this year to some of the 26 councils which have signed up to the Scottish Household Recycling Charter – an initiative which is helping councils move towards a consistent recycling system.
Iain Gulland, chief executive, Zero Waste Scotland which manages the Circular Economy Investment Fund, said:
“We’re grateful for the support of Scottish Government and European Regional Development Funding, which is helping to make the development some of these new ideas possible. These new design and business ideas are going to be crucial to changing the way we make and do things. Scotland has the potential to lead the way in this area and I’m excited to see these new businesses develop.”
There was no ‘focus’ to make this stuff happen before devo. How much better could it be done with the full panoply of powers of a ‘normal’ Independent nation. (Notice also the active involvement of the European Regional Development funding in these projects)
