Tory ‘surge’ was just a stirring of an unchanged Unionist vote

Only a vote for the Scottish Conservatives will send a strong message that we oppose SNP’s divisive plan for a second referendum.

The Tories made opposition to a second independence referendum the central issue of their campaign. They explicitly asked the Scottish electorate to come out and vote against it. This is, of course, not really a local election issue so their failure to reduce the pro-referendum SNP vote means they lost the election on that issue. From the SNP website:

  1. The SNP won the election nationally, with the largest number of councillors and the highest vote share of any party.
  2. We’ve won more councillors, with 431 elected compared to 425 in 2012.
  3. The SNP is now the largest group in 16 of 32 councils.
  4. The SNP has ended almost 40 years of Labour control in Glasgow, becoming the largest party in the city for the first time.
  5. The SNP are now the largest party in Scotland’s four largest cities: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee.

In response to the Tory call for a vote against Indyref2, those who were already in agreement merely switched their vote to the Tories. While the mainstream media are making much of their 164 seats gained, these came from Labour who lost 112 and the Independents who lost 86.

So, on their own chosen ground, the Tories lost. The idea that they have in any way damaged the referendum bid is plain daft. As for the Labour voters who stuck to their leftist principles, who knows how close they are to becoming Yes voters next time?

You have obviously not been paying attention to the MSM or you would realise that 276 is a far bigger number than 431 and that by gaining 6 more seats than they did in 2012, the SNP actually lost 7.

Couldn’t bring myself to buy the Herald today…… Don’t know if I’ll cross that bridge again, does the publisher need to make a profit.?

Hardly ever see an SNP representative taking on Media lies. This morning heard Stephen Gethins agree/ accept with Gordon Brewer that the SNP lost seats in the council election ( heard third hand that John Nicholson did the same during interview) I reckon they are not well informed… Should spend more time checking out pro Indy sites ….. This one , WoS, Talking Up Scotland etc.

The SNP should see to it that people put forward for interview are up on current Unionist media attack lines / lies…. That would be a job for one person. The cause is just etc. ….. The ducking and diving aint!

Agree. Some SNP spokesmen/women seem to get their information from the MSM and just appear to go along with the spin and lies. Frustrating to say the least. They must be well aware that they will not get a powder puff interview so should not be allowed near a studio unless they are well prepared and clued up.

Agree , I have said for a long time they should only let certain people take on the media , Jeannie Freeman ,Joanna Cherry ,Tasmina Ahmed -Sheikh , to name a few .

Gethins and Nicholson are very capable of taking on the media, both were not briefed, up to speed on the BBC twisting the result, as Clydebuilt says the party should ensure people put up for interview are briefed on the latest political shenanigans. The SNP seem very professional, where’s the quality control for interview.
