Scotland’s exports increase more than those of rUK in 2017 and we remain the only part of the UK with a significant trade surplus which would require no debt

The above graph shows, to the end of September 2017, the trade deficits of every other part of the UK and Scotland’s now long-standing surplus.  Further, Scotland’s exports increased to the end of June, by 20%, while those of England increased by only 14%, suggesting the gap in the overall economic performance of the two countries is widening.

At the same time, the UK’s overall trade deficit widened to £8.9 billion reflecting increased imports. You can see from the above graph that this deficit is long-standing

You’ll see from previous reports detail of the nature of Scotland’s booming export industries and the role the Scottish Government has played in supporting this trend:

Scottish food and drink exports still booming so is it still only 28% of the UK’s food and drink exports? We’re still only 8% of the population

13% increase in Salmon farming jobs as Scottish salmon sales help UK exports hit record high

After 45% increase in Whisky exports to China, they cut the tariffs by 10%. Eh?

26% increase in Scottish pharmaceuticals exports in just five years.

Scottish Government grants to further boost Scotland’s food and drink industry which already produces 28% of all UK exports

The unavoidable conclusion is that Scotland continues to be saddled with debt she has not incurred yet which is used in the GERS figures to suggest falsely that Scotland’s economy is weaker than it really is.

Footnote: N Ireland has (small) trade surplus for the first time in years.

Is Douglas Fraser-But aware of these figures?
Douglas Fraser-But always seems to take a negative view of stats concerning Scotland.
These might change his tune, but……………………………..

Hi John – Hi Gavin – Not a cheep out of Doulas F thus far! – Noticed from the National that Scotland’s exports to EU in particular increased by 21.7% to £13.4 Billion. The frothing mouthed britnats want to pull us out of this market. Talking of which – always good to see dissent in our opponent’s ranks (From the National below):

SCOTLAND in Union aren’t feeling very united at the moment, after a schism over Brexit in the anti-independence organisation saw prominent members leave to start up their own campaign.

The newly founded Unity UK, is virulently anti-independence, anti-further devolution and, unlike Scotland in Union, strongly pro-Brexit. Leaving the EU is going to be great, the organisation says.

Scotland in Union’s development manager, David Clews, and social media co-ordinator, Kyle Coats, are behind the new group, which formally launches in Glasgow today.
Clews is a former Renfrewshire councillor. In 2011, he ditched Annabel Goldie’s Tory party defecting to Iain Gray’s Labour. Though he says he is still on/off Labour.

In Trumpian language, the website accuse politicians arguing against Brexit of “betraying the British people”. More than 2000 supporters have signed up to the site in the last fortnight.
Clews told The Herald: “I would describe ourselves as populist. We believe that in Scotland there’s a need for a much more aggressive pro-UK campaign, one that can remind people of the hope that being part of the UK can bring”.

Former Labour MSP Graeme Pearson left his post as Scotland In Union’s chief executive in August, just seven months after taking the job. The current chair in Pamela Nash, a former Labour MP. Alistair Cameron who founded the group said: “Scotland in Union has no link to [UK Unity] at all. I would not call them a breakaway group. I’d call them individuals who were with Scotland in Union who have decided they want to do something else.”

SNP MSP George Adam said: “It’s refreshing to see the ultra-Unionists experiment with independence — taking their own future into their own hands. But it’s little wonder that this right-wing front is tearing itself apart over Brexit — much like Tory policy.”

(It would seem Scotland In Union aren’t sufficiently batshit crazy for Unity UK!! – I bet I know where History Woman will end up).

Hi John – might this new crop be a major export in years to come? (See below):

ONE of the world’s most expensive ingredients has been cultivated near Edinburgh following seven years of attempts. Researchers from Mycorrhizal Systems Ltd teamed up with local farmers to cultivate the summer or burgundy truffle. This is the first time the ingredient has been successfully cultivated in Scotland.

Just a note, it wasn’t actually seven years of attempts – just one attempt, truffles just happen to take around seven years to grow! We’re hoping Scotland will have a great truffle industry (our MD is based here) – If you need more info feel free to let me know.

Proof positive that an SNP Govt is good for us (See below):

Variation in life expectancy between areas in Scotland

Commenting on the report published today, Chief Executive of National Records of Scotland and Registrar General for Scotland Tim Ellis said:
“The statistics published today show that every council area of Scotland has seen an increase in life expectancy over the past decade, but there is still a lot of variation between areas.

ALL COUNCIL AREAS have seen an increase in life expectancy since 2004-2006. For Scotland as a whole, life expectancy has increased for male by 2.5 years and for females by 1.6 years.

More good news re. the SNP Govt. End Period Poverty campaign (see below):

Last week, Dundee University made 10,000 free sanitary products available across the campus ahead of the Scottish Government’s commitment to supply free sanitary products to schools, colleges and universities by August 2018.

The announcement was made by Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, at the SNP conference in October after a six-month pilot that benefited 1,000 women and young girls in Aberdeen.

Earlier this week, Network Rail in Scotland announced that it is developing plans to dispense free sanitary products in it toilets at both Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley stations.
