I hadn’t realised that you, David Lodge and Malcolm Bradbury were all one and the same person… oh, you’re not? Then all I can say is that you’ve a great outline for a novel and that I hope you that your agent has secured a good publishing deal. What do you mean ‘it isn’t satire’? It has to be …. surely …

A Scottish one, of course. If only there were a Tonpans Press; or maybe Saltire Satire Ink. Can’t see UWS doing it though.

Tonpans Press! Excellent!!! Would the owner be a J Cope (Books and Percussion Instruments Ltd) with late opening hours to make up for sleepin in, woken by neighbours shouting Hi Johnny Cope are ye wakin yit? Excuse uncertain use of ‘wakin’.

Seriously tho none of my fiends in the Yes media will touch it nor will they tell me straight why not. Am I paranoid?

    Cheers John

Oh yeh and thanks again for the David Lodge ref. I guess you’ve read the Campus Trilogy. Can’t be Bradbury unless I introduce a blowjob. There probably were, mind, a few along with the arse-licking.

Paranoid? If so, with very good reason no doubt! I speak as someone who spent 30 years in academe and can testify to the vicious, cowardly pusillanimity that characterises many of the self-inflated in the ‘upper echelons’.

Tonpans Press proprietor? Possibly one Philip Beggs. J.Cope & Co. would have been a rival firm that constantly missed its publication dates and, indeed, succeeded in losing all its drafts.

    Yours in levity,

    Michael.
