Any falling graph tends to cause concern, but the context is important. Just over 70.1% of patients were seen at the end of 2018, a fall of 0.6% from the end of 2017. The fall from the high point in 2012 is nearly 18%.

However, the increase in demand for outpatient treatment, since only 2014 has been a massive 26.9% and for inpatient treatment, it has seen an almost irresistible surge of 34.9%:

That demand has increased by between 26.9 and 34.9%, while performance has only fallen by less than 18% means, unequivocally, that performance has improved dramatically at the same time.

    Every day I read TUS with a feeling of great hope for Scotland, with a dash of trepidation at seeing again how the real news and info is distorted by newspapers and TV news, and quite a lot of anger at how self destructive many Scots are when they seem desperate to believe the distorted news about Scotland.
    But this is great work and essential reading.

    I estimate that taking the increase in patient numbers into account that the 2018 performance (c70%) is equivalent to a performance of >90% in 2014.

    So, you are justified in bestowing such high praise on NHS Scotland staff.

    Each year there are between 4.2 – 4.5 million OPD appointments of which 1.4-1.5 million are first appointments of which around 10% do not show up or let the hospital know they are not coming

    Each month there are between 25,000 – 30,000 planned operations

    Each week there are between 25,000 – 30,000 attendances at A&E of which around 25% are admitted to hospital.

    Each year around 54,000 babies are born in Scottish hospitals

    The work ethic to get through that and all the rest of the things the NHS does the organisation required to keep it running is staggering. Yet a dirty toilet fitting is promoted as evidence it is failing!
