Just a quick one.
Sarah Smith, ‘Scotland Editor’ has just posted:
‘The Scottish Six is dead – long live the Scottish Nine’
I don’t know why the SNP want a Scottish Six and no English news. I can think of nothing worse as we seek independence. Think about it:
- We wouldn’t see how bad things are in England so that we can see the SNP must be doing something right in, for example, protecting our NHS from the horrors being perpetrated there and generally moderating the effects of Tory austerity.
- Imagine twice as much bad news about Scotland.
- Imagine twice as much of Jackie bird and Glen Campbell.

Just facts, that’s all.
I rest my case.
John, you appear to be making the assumption that this amazing new news service will be just as biased as what we have!
Fair enough 🙂
They are creating a whole new digital channel to show it, creatively called ‘BBC Scotland’ (catchy), but don’t say whether Reporting Scotland is to go or not. This article actually infuriated me:

Summarising, it seems to say ‘we really are taking the piss now’. I mean, aside from the pittance they are spending, they say there will be 80 new jobs for journalists,,, journalists? How are you going to produce new programmes with just journalists? No camera men, no floor managers, no editors, no all the other folks that are needed? What sort of plan is that? And a TV channel that runs between 7 and midnight, so it doesn’t interfere with BBC1 6 o’clock news perhaps? Because viewing figures are too low as they are perhaps?
This is hardly going to boost the creative broadcasting industry in Scotland, that’s for sure. The whole thing is so London-centric it is unbelievable. My wee sister has to stay in London to get work in the industry, of which there is lots, but only in one place!
The new channel appears to be designed to be a flop, they can say they tried, and scrap any Scottish news at all because we are obviously not interested. I think the SNP, by sticking with wanting a Scottish six, want to keep Scottish news relevant, however bad it is. People will watch prime time, but no one will switch over after the main news.

And, indeed, Fiona Hyslop is a bit more critical of the BBC decision:

They have to go entirely. There are hundreds of good replacements out there.

What would be your ideal broadcasting situation in Scotland? What are the good replacements? Sorry, I just don’t watch the telly at all anymore, so don’t have a clue. I did donate to a fledgling broadcaster at new year there, but have never checked back to see how they are doing!

I suspect we’d need to wait till after independence and recruit then.

We don’t need to worry, no body is going to watch it……. There’s lots of drama on at 9pm. Your average viewer has seen the tea time news and won’t miss the cop / murder drama at 9pm to watch more news. Sorted!
