8% of the population yet 9.6% of the UK’s foreign direct investment – another confidence boost

From Insider today:

‘Foreign Direct Investment in Scotland at ‘unprecedented’ levels Figures from accountancy group EY show the country is maintaining its attractiveness among foreign investors, even though other European countries are narrowing the gap with the UK. Scotland attracted a new record of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for the third year in a row in 2017 and set a new 10-year high, according to new figures from accountancy group EY. The country experienced a 7 per cent increase in the number of projects it secured last year, taking the total up to 116. This rate of growth was higher than the UK as a whole at 6 per cent, and thus Scotland’s share of UK FDI rose to 9.6 per cent in 2017, above the historical average of 9.3 per cent.’

Previous examples of the 8%, good news, meme, include:

8% of the population, nearly 9% of the exports but only 5.25% of the imports

Return of the meme? Only 8% of the population but Scotland has 21.7% of all independent renewable projects in the UK

Still 8% of the population but now 30% of UK food and drink exports?

8% of the UK population and 28% of living wage employers. More evidence that we are different enough to want to run the whole show?

With only 8% of the population, Scotland’s maritime sector accounts for 25% of the UK maritime sector’s (GVA) contribution to the economy and is 17.5% more productive than the UK marine oil and gas sector. Once more, too wee, too poor?

Once again, it’s the ‘8% of the UK population but much more of something good’ meme. This time it’s 33% of employee-owned firms in the UK

Percentages – the reliable basis for comparing Scotland with the non-Scottish parts of the UK.

Hi John – 8% of the population – but ‘Scottish’ Tory councillors provide 24% of the UK Tory councillors’ membership of an extremist racist/Islamaphobic facebook group (previously exposed by BBC believe it or not! – NOTE also that Col. Davidson has also been the target of unpleasant comments within the facebook group – As the saying has it – As ye sow – so shall ye reap):

Nana across on Wings gave a link to this evolvepolitics piece (based on a Red Roar investigation); Edited snippets below:

10 Tory MPs and 25 Tory Councillors exposed as members of racist Islamophobic anti-Muslim Facebook group
    ByTom D. Rogers

    10th June 2018
Ten current serving Conservative MPs and twenty five Tory Councillors have been exposed as being members of a racist anti-Muslim Facebook group whose members have said they want to ‘ban Islam’ and have likened Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott to a gorilla, an investigation has revealed.

High profile Tory MPs such as the current bookies’ favourite to take over as Tory leader Jacob Rees-Mogg, as well as the Conservative Chair for Youth Ben
Bradley were both among the ten Tory MPs reportedly found to be members of the openly racist Conservative Debating Forum group.

The Red Roar’s investigation also reveals numerous other examples or blatantly racist and discriminatory views being expressed in the group, such as:
    • Calls for Diane Abbott to be deported
    • Calling pro-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller a ‘damn foreigner’, an ‘immigrant pipsqueak’, and one member demanding that she ‘go home’ or she will ‘get what she deserves’.
    • Calling Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson, who is gay, ‘sick’ for becoming pregnant
    • Members demanding that homosexuals shouldn’t be allowed to raise children
Following the Red Roar’s publication of their investigation, the Conservative Debating Group changed the group name to the Conservative Politics Forum.

Below is a full list of ‘Scottish’ Tory cooncillors who were members of the openly racist group on the morning of Friday June 9th:
    Dave Dempsey, Fife
    Ray McLean, Moray
    Graham Hutchison, Edinburgh
    Andrew Jarvie, the Highlands
    Graeme Brooks, Inverclyde
    Kieran Munroe, Midlothian

There is no suggestion that any of those listed have engaged in any of the reprehensible behaviour reported in this article. A number of Tory politicians have said they had no knowledge of being signed up to the group and have also indicated that they have now left the group following the revelations about the nature of content within it.

A spokesman for the group told The Guardian:
“We have been particularly tougher on people who overstep the mark in recent months…. We are deeply saddened that despite our best efforts to prevent situations like this from arising, some individuals cannot seemingly abide by group rules.”

    Whilst a Conservative spokesman said:
“This Facebook group is in no way affiliated to the Conservative party and we strongly condemn the abhorrent views shared by some members of this group.”

(NOTE: From Red Roar: “All have become or remained members of the group since July 2017, when the BBC ran an article on pro-Conservative Facebook groups that reported the Conservative Debating Forum’s targeting of Shadow Home Secretary, Diane Abbott for its “harshest criticism”. The article gave an example of one post which used an image to liken Abbott to an orang-utan”)
